    Ermakov Systems with Multiplicative Noise

    Using the Euler-Maruyama numerical method, we present calculations of the Ermakov-Lewis invariant and the dynamic, geometric, and total phases for several cases of stochastic parametric oscillators, including the simplest case of the stochastic harmonic oscillator. The results are compared with the corresponding numerical noiseless cases to evaluate the effect of the noise. Besides, the noiseless cases are analytic and their analytic solutions are briefly presented. The Ermakov-Lewis invariant is not affected by the multiplicative noise in the three particular examples presented in this work, whereas there is a shift effect in the case of the phasesComment: 12 pages, 4 figures, 22 reference

    Seleção de porta-enxertos para maracujazeiro-amarelo nas condições da depressão cuiabana.

    O presente trabalho foi realizado na Fazenda Experimental da Fundação Universidade Federal de Mato Grosso, com o objetivo de selecionar porta-enxertos, que apresentava maior vigor vegetativo para o maracujazeiros-amarelos, nas condições da Depressão Cuiabana. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi blocos ao acaso, sendo as épocas de avaliação consideradas como blocos (60, 75, 90, 105 e 120 dias), os tratamentos foram os porta-enxertos (seleção FB200 e a espécie Passiflora nítida), com 3 repetições. As variáveis estudadas foram o diâmetro do colo, diâmetro do tronco cerca de 1 cm acima da região enxertada, altura do colo da planta até o enxerto, altura a partir do enxerto, altura total, número de entrenós até a região enxertada, número de entrenós a partir da região enxertada e número de folhas. Os dados foram tabulados utilizando-se o pacote Statistical Package for the Social Science (SPSS) versão 11.0 e submetidos à analise estatística descritiva. Posteriormente, as variáveis foram submetidas à análise de variância multivariada com dois fatores (Manova two-way). O uso da análise de MANOVA, possibilitou observar que os porta-enxertos, o tempo e as interação entre eles tiveram grande importância na avaliação do desenvolvimento vegetativo do maracujazeiro-amarelo. A melhor resposta quanto ao desenvolvimento vegetativo foi induzido pelo porta-enxerto. O porta-enxerto ?FB200? apresentou resultados mais favoráveis quanto ao vigor de suas mudas

    HATS-3b: An inflated hot Jupiter transiting an F-type star

    We report the discovery by the HATSouth survey of HATS-3b, a transiting extrasolar planet orbiting a V=12.4 F-dwarf star. HATS-3b has a period of P = 3.5479d, mass of Mp = 1.07MJ, and radius of Rp = 1.38RJ. Given the radius of the planet, the brightness of the host star, and the stellar rotational velocity (vsini = 9.0km/s), this system will make an interesting target for future observations to measure the Rossiter-McLaughlin effect and determine its spin-orbit alignment. We detail the low/medium-resolution reconnaissance spectroscopy that we are now using to deal with large numbers of transiting planet candidates produced by the HATSouth survey. We show that this important step in discovering planets produces logg and Teff parameters at a precision suitable for efficient candidate vetting, as well as efficiently identifying stellar mass eclipsing binaries with radial velocity semi-amplitudes as low as 1 km/s.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, submitted to A

    HATS-5b: A Transiting hot-Saturn from the HATSouth Survey

    We report the discovery of HATS-5b, a transiting hot-Saturn orbiting a G type star, by the HAT-South survey. HATS-5b has a mass of Mp=0.24 Mj, radius of Rp=0.91 Rj, and transits its host star with a period of P=4.7634d. The radius of HATS-5b is consistent with both theoretical and empirical models. The host star has a V band magnitude of 12.6, mass of 0.94 Msun, and radius of 0.87 Rsun. The relatively high scale height of HATS-5b, and the bright, photometrically quiet host star, make this planet a favourable target for future transmission spectroscopy follow-up observations. We reexamine the correlations in radius, equilibrium temperature, and metallicity of the close-in gas-giants, and find hot Jupiter-mass planets to exhibit the strongest dependence between radius and equilibrium temperature. We find no significant dependence in radius and metallicity for the close-in gas-giant population.Comment: 10 pages, submitted to A

    Localization of Eigenfunctions in the Stadium Billiard

    We present a systematic survey of scarring and symmetry effects in the stadium billiard. The localization of individual eigenfunctions in Husimi phase space is studied first, and it is demonstrated that on average there is more localization than can be accounted for on the basis of random-matrix theory, even after removal of bouncing-ball states and visible scars. A major point of the paper is that symmetry considerations, including parity and time-reversal symmetries, enter to influence the total amount of localization. The properties of the local density of states spectrum are also investigated, as a function of phase space location. Aside from the bouncing-ball region of phase space, excess localization of the spectrum is found on short periodic orbits and along certain symmetry-related lines; the origin of all these sources of localization is discussed quantitatively and comparison is made with analytical predictions. Scarring is observed to be present in all the energy ranges considered. In light of these results the excess localization in individual eigenstates is interpreted as being primarily due to symmetry effects; another source of excess localization, scarring by multiple unstable periodic orbits, is smaller by a factor of \sqrt{\hbar}.Comment: 31 pages, including 10 figure

    HATS-6b: A Warm Saturn Transiting an Early M Dwarf Star, and a Set of Empirical Relations for Characterizing K and M Dwarf Planet Hosts

    We report the discovery by the HATSouth survey of HATS-6b, an extrasolar planet transiting a V=15.2 mag, i=13.7 mag M1V star with a mass of 0.57 Msun and a radius of 0.57 Rsun. HATS-6b has a period of P = 3.3253 d, mass of Mp=0.32 Mjup, radius of Rp=1.00 Rjup, and zero-albedo equilibrium temperature of Teq=712.8+-5.1 K. HATS-6 is one of the lowest mass stars known to host a close-in gas giant planet, and its transits are among the deepest of any known transiting planet system. We discuss the follow-up opportunities afforded by this system, noting that despite the faintness of the host star, it is expected to have the highest K-band S/N transmission spectrum among known gas giant planets with Teq < 750 K. In order to characterize the star we present a new set of empirical relations between the density, radius, mass, bolometric magnitude, and V, J, H and K-band bolometric corrections for main sequence stars with M < 0.80 Msun, or spectral types later than K5. These relations are calibrated using eclipsing binary components as well as members of resolved binary systems. We account for intrinsic scatter in the relations in a self-consistent manner. We show that from the transit-based stellar density alone it is possible to measure the mass and radius of a ~0.6 Msun star to ~7% and ~2% precision, respectively. Incorporating additional information, such as the V-K color, or an absolute magnitude, allows the precision to be improved by up to a factor of two.Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures, 10 tables.     Using Nonlinear Response to Estimate the Strength of an Elastic Network

    Disordered networks of fragile elastic elements have been proposed as a model of inner porous regions of large bones [Gunaratne et.al., cond-mat/0009221, http://xyz.lanl.gov]. It is shown that the ratio Γ\Gamma of responses of such a network to static and periodic strain can be used to estimate its ultimate (or breaking) stress. Since bone fracture in older adults results from the weakening of porous bone, we discuss the possibility of using Γ\Gamma as a non-invasive diagnostic of osteoporotic bone.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Optical and Infrared Photometry of the Unusual Type Ia Supernova 2000cx

    We present optical and infrared photometry of the unusual Type Ia supernova 2000cx. With the data of Li et al. (2001) and Jha (2002), this comprises the largest dataset ever assembled for a Type Ia SN, more than 600 points in UBVRIJHK. We confirm the finding of Li et al. regarding the unusually blue B-V colors as SN 2000cx entered the nebular phase. Its I-band secondary hump was extremely weak given its B-band decline rate. The V minus near infrared colors likewise do not match loci based on other slowly declining Type Ia SNe, though V-K is the least ``abnormal''. In several ways SN 2000cx resembles other slow decliners, given its B-band decline rate (Delta m_15(B) = 0.93), the appearance of Fe III lines and weakness of Si II in its pre-maximum spectrum, the V-K colors and post-maximum V-H colors. If the distance modulus derived from Surface Brightness Fluctuations of the host galaxy is correct, we find that the rate of light increase prior to maximum, the characteristics of the bolometric light curve, and the implied absolute magnitude at maximum are all consistent with a sub-luminous object with Delta m_15(B) ~ 1.6-1.7 having a higher than normal kinetic energy.Comment: 46 pages, 17 figures, to be published in Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacifi

    HATS-15 b and HATS-16 b: Two massive planets transiting old G dwarf stars

    We report the discovery of HATS-15 b and HATS-16 b, two massive transiting extrasolar planets orbiting evolved (10\sim 10 Gyr) main-sequence stars. The planet HATS-15 b, which is hosted by a G9V star (V=14.8V=14.8 mag), is a hot Jupiter with mass of 2.17±0.15MJ2.17\pm0.15\, M_{\mathrm{J}} and radius of 1.105±0.0.040RJ1.105\pm0.0.040\, R_{\mathrm{J}}, and completes its orbit in nearly 1.7 days. HATS-16 b is a very massive hot Jupiter with mass of 3.27±0.19MJ3.27\pm0.19\, M_{\mathrm{J}} and radius of 1.30±0.15RJ1.30\pm0.15\, R_{\mathrm{J}}; it orbits around its G3 V parent star (V=13.8V=13.8 mag) in 2.7\sim2.7 days. HATS-16 is slightly active and shows a periodic photometric modulation, implying a rotational period of 12 days which is unexpectedly short given its isochronal age.
